In this short piece of article, we are going to discuss classification of magnetic materials with examples. So let’s get started…
Classification of magnetic material
On the basis of behaviour in the external magnetic field, Michael Faraday classified the materials into three categories which are as given below.
Diamagnetic material
Diamagnetic material are those which develops feeble magnetization in the opposite direction of the magnetising field.
These materials are feebly repelled by the magnet and tends to move from stronger magnetic field to the weaker part of magnetic field.
Some examples of diamagnetic materials are: Bismuth, copper, zinc, tin, gold, silicon, nitrogen (at STP), water, and sodium chloride etc.
Paramagnetic material
Paramagnetic material are those which develops feeble magnetization in the direction of the magnetising field.
These materials are feebly attracted by the magnet and tends to move from weaker to the stronger part of magnetic field.
Some examples of paramagnetic material are: Manganese, aluminium, chromium, platinum, sodium, copper chloride, and oxygen (at STP) etc.

Ferromagnetic material
Ferromagnetic material are those which develops strong magnetization in the direction of the magnetising field. These substances are strongly attracted by the magnet and tends to move from weaker to the stronger part of magnetic field.
Some examples of ferromagnetic material are: iron, cobalt, gadolinium etc.
